Matthew Braun is an artist and educator from Madison, WI. He explores a variety of mediums in his artwork including drawing, painting, printmaking and collage.
Braun has a large body of work focussing on portraiture. In these artworks, he experiments with the juxtaposition of portraiture and newspaper collage. Each piece is created based on his photographs and experiences teaching and traveling throughout Asia and the United States as a way to encapsulate a memory or moment in time. These works often take on a political context highlighting social issues and lifting up individuals who are often overlooked.
Recently he has been using thrift shop paintings and other found items to use as the base for his artwork. He paints or collages new elements into these found canvases to create new artwork that have a whimsical or humorous nature.
